I am Kuba is a coming-of-age film following Kuba (13) who is given the responsibility of looking after his little brother when mum and dad are away. The task is not easy when Kuba himself is dealing with his own worries and teenage dilemmas…
When the family business goes bankrupt, Kuba’s (13) and Mikołaj’s (8) parents are forced to leave Poland to work abroad. Kuba struggles with the different roles in his life, shifting from being the older brother in charge of the house and a teenager who wants to explore and hang out with his friends.
By following Kuba the film tells a story that has become typical in modern Europe. It is estimated that over 100,000 Polish children are left by their parents to be raised on their own, or by ageing grandparents. I am Kuba is a film about how this affects the life of the children growing up as “euro orphans”.
