So. Writer/director Hilde Brinchmann calls me one day and says: "Hi Eirik, how about writing the score for NARNIA, yes? No pressure!" Yes, Hilde has written a NEW stage adaptation of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis. This is a big deal. It’s the first time in more than 40 years that the C.S. Lewis Company has approved a new theatre script of Narnia (not including musicals). It seems you have to be Hilde Brinchmann to achieve something like that.
THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE premiered at Riksteatret March 6th, 2025 and went on a massive nationwide tour – over 90 sold out performances. In 2026 the production will move to Den Nationale Scene in Bergen.
I honestly think it’s a beautiful adaptation – one that approaches the 75-year-old story in a way that hasn’t really been done before: by diving deeper into what the four Pevensie children actually experience, and letting them tell the story themselves, from their own perspective. By avoiding the literal depiction of the fantasy world – which film and TV are kind of forced to do – the stage version actually becomes, in my opinion, more faithful to the book itself.
As for the music, I must have been working on it steadily for well over six months, approaching the task with an appropriate (and healthy?) dose of reverence. The aim was to create a brand new musical world that could carry it all – the heart, the wonder, the danger and the hope of Narnia. The hour-long recorded score features the amazing Trondheim Soloists on strings, Ingrid Holmen on flute and Marie Solum Gran on horn – while I handle piano, percussion and various other bits myself.
Having such a stellar ensemble of session musicians for pre-recorded music in a Norwegian theatre production is pretty much unheard of, so a HUGE and heartfelt thank you to Riksteatret for recognising the importance of the music strongly enough to make this possible! And an extra warm thank you to Hilde, for once again letting me create epic art with you and your brilliant brain. And to everyone on and off stage who have done such a phenomenal job bringing this story to life in the most exquisite way. Every single member of the artistic dream team, every actor and every magician behind the scenes! ❤️
A big thanks to GILT for helping me tie together the threads of my creative chaos 💥 — and not least to Lina, who has to live with that chaos 24/7 and is still my fiancée, even after this crazy period. ❤️
A three track mini EP, called "Journey to Narnia", is available on all major music streaming platforms. A full length album with the hour-long score will be released at a later date.
Until then: May Aslan be with you. 🦁🎭🎶
