How can you think if you cannot speak? Four kids, age 5 to 15, share their thoughts on aphasia and talk about what it’s like when family members lose their language. In this beautiful documentary short animation film by Marita Mayer, the animated images are based on self-portraits drawn by the children interviewed. Their individual perspectives reveal how much love, patience, and creativity are necessary when language doesn’t function the way it is supposed to.
The score is quite minimalist and organic, feels like something you can touch, and at the same time feels very light, like a piece of paper. I thought it went well with the animation style. There are few instruments. Piano, mellotron, guitars and melodic percussion is played in a very light way, and there is a lot of «air», with a simple, warm and thoughtful main theme as the centrepiece. It was really great to work with Marita, and I hope we can do it again!
